MY WORST MOMENT

Being told that I was such a good consultant that I deserved a top project and would be invited to bid for consulting with a large chemical global major – it would have been an excellent project for my business. Closely followed by a conversation that went along the lines of… I’m not good with commitment, my wife knows and she said it’s OK if I have affairs as long as I don’t leave her. Sex doesn’t have to involve commitment – what do you think?  I was heading off in an Uber on my own within five minutes. Needless to say, the project never emerged.

I HAVE GIVEN UP ON

Working for an employer due to the patriarchal, sexist and abusive nature of male-dominated workplaces. I am sick to death of being told that there are no women in the industry to recruit as a reason for the continual lack of hiring of women. Then the resulting toxic masculinity that seems to build in virtually all-male teams.

I’M AFRAID

I’m afraid of sexual harassment from some of my male contacts. Even though the majority are very kind, honest and decent men. I worry that one day I might find myself in a situation I can’t handle and I wonder how I would be able to defend myself.

THIS HAS COST ME

It’s impossible to know all the times I’ve not been hired, promoted, paid less, and the amount that going self-employed and the time taken to build up a business has cost me. I’d put it at well over £100,000 in lost earnings to date.  I’ve needed counseling to deal with the stress of aggressive male project managers and had sleepless nights, poorer eating habits, etc due to workplace stress caused by sexism. The trauma of the memories puts me off ever trying to work in a mainstream city consultancy ever again.

SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW

I am regarded as brave and open-minded. I have fairly equal numbers of male and female friends and have gained the respect of the majority of my male and female contacts. I am a feminist but in no way anti-men. I just believe that a diverse workforce naturally brings with it respect for both genders and I’d like to see the gender imbalance in STEM careers eradicated.

IS THERE A BRIGHT SIDE?

I’m stronger and I’m in charge of my own destiny. I use my position as a business owner to encourage other women to enter STEM careers, and to be a positive role model wherever possible.
