My Name is Sue

As a mother pursuing her PhD, a professor talked about his vasectomy during office hours, and then offer Sue a fellowship as his assistant. Stock Photo: Pexels.com

MY WORST MOMENT

When the professor closed the door to his office and began the conversation with, “I want you to know that I have had a vasectomy.” He then proceeded to offer me a doctoral fellowship to work as his assistant. I told him that I would have to consider all that he had told me that day and that I would get back to him. I had a 9 year old girl and a 6 year old boy at the time. I was in my early 30s.

I HAVE GIVEN UP ON

I did not give up. I did not attend the second “required” office visit for the semester. I retired in Florida and he retired there by coincidence.  I read in a newspaper what an upstanding citizen this man is.

I’M AFRAID

I am only afraid that the professor will deny this happened, no doubt to several female students, and accuse me of being a senile old woman.

THIS HAS COST ME

Thank goodness I was married and the mother of two children. I was married to a professor at a different college. My husband advised me to avoid future office visits and keep quiet until I received my grade for the course taught by the man who did the sexual harassment.

SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW

I acquired three degrees and noticed how many women had sex with professors for whatever reason.
My professor husband said that a female student approached him with a sexual proposition to bring her course grade to passing.
The propositions go both ways, but the person with power is in control. That is unless a female student decides to accuse a professor of sexual harassment.

IS THERE A BRIGHT SIDE?

The #MeToo movement has caused men to at least consider legal consequences for their misconduct. My daughter became a Human Resources director and helped employees to understand their rights.

MY FIGHT SONGS

Since it is difficult to prove sexual harassment, talk to a Human Resources person about your situation.

MY SECRET WEAPON

The only weapon a woman has is to communicate to authorities what is happening, even if a woman cannot prove the harassment. I should have told human resources at the university so that the professor’s behavior could be scrutinized and no more required office visits. I have taught in college and kept a watchful eye on colleagues.
